Canalys responds to Xiaomi's statement on errors in other companies' reporting of its Q1 smartphone estimates

On 2 May, Xiaomi released a special announcement, which stated that “recently several media publications quoted some information from certain market research institutions about our estimated shipment of smartphones in the first quarter of 2019. The information is inaccurate and unfair, and deviates from our actual performance in terms of shipment of smartphones.” Canalys wants to make it absolutely clear that it was not the company responsible for the inaccurate data and that its reputation remains unblemished.

For the avoidance of doubt, Canalys published its Q1 2019 shipment estimates on 1 May, and reported that Xiaomi had shipped 27.8 million units during the quarter. This compares closely with the statement Xiaomi made on 2 May that “our shipment of smartphones in the first quarter of 2019 exceeded 27.5 million.”
